Porcelain for living rooms

Floors, fireplace walls and TV walls in porcelain slabs and tiles for the living room.

Why porcelain works in the living room

Porcelain for living rooms stands up to the most traffic in the house: it does not scratch under furniture, does not fade by the window and takes pets, kids and spills without a sealer. Large formats up to 64x128 mean fewer grout lines across an open-plan floor.

Use one design from the entry through the living and dining areas and into the bedrooms for a continuous floor, and bring it up the fireplace or the TV wall as a slab. Start with the surface you are planning below, then see how other living rooms put it together.

Living room floors

Large tiles and slabs run across an open-plan floor with very few grout lines, in a matte or a polished finish.

Fireplace walls

Porcelain is fired at over 2,000 degrees: a fireplace surround in one slab takes the heat and keeps the veining in one piece.

TV and accent walls

A bookmatched pair of slabs behind the TV or the sofa turns one wall into the focus of the room.

Porcelain in the living room: FAQ

Is porcelain tile a good choice for a living room floor?

Yes. Porcelain is harder than most natural materials, so chairs, pets and daily traffic do not scratch it, and it does not fade next to a sunny window. A large format keeps grout lines to a minimum across an open-plan floor.

Can porcelain go around a fireplace?

Yes. Porcelain is fired at very high temperatures and does not burn, crack or discolor next to a fireplace. One slab covers the surround with the veining in a single piece; your installer plans the cuts from your measurements.

What size tile is best for a large living room?

The larger the better: 24x48 and 48x48 tiles, or slabs up to 64x128, give fewer grout lines and make the room feel bigger. See large-format porcelain slabs.

Polished or matte for a living room floor?

Polished reflects light and suits a formal room; matte hides footprints and dust and gives more grip. Many living rooms pair a matte floor with a polished slab on the fireplace or TV wall.

Can the living room floor continue into the kitchen?

Yes. One design through the living, dining and kitchen areas gives an open-plan home a continuous floor. See porcelain for kitchens for the surfaces on that side.
